Perfumes
and fragrances can be powerful and can have a serious staying power which will
linger long after you have applied them. The French in particular are well
known for designing fragrances and fragrance makers have stated that perfume
also forms a culture and is part of life, the same as food and wine. When one
starts applying perfume for the first time, you learn to dab perfume on your
pulse points such as your wrists, the neck, behind the ears and knees. Perfume
is very personal an intimate and what may smell great on one person may smell
bad on another. The French in particular enjoy spicy dark fragrances such as
Neroli and citrus, although they produce many alluring fragrances that are
fresh and subtle.
The eastern spice traders in the early days
left a signature and mark on the perfume culture around the world. When Italy
for instance was invaded by the Arabs and Romans, the tastes of perfumes
intertwined with orange blossom, sweet spicy notes, sandalwood and Neroli. The
Persians extracted oils from flowers by distilling them, as fragrances in the
Middle East are ingrained in the culture and people wear perfume daily.
Besides
women's fragrance and perfumes providing a personal statement, many people use
fragrances to anoint themselves for spiritual purposes. Depending on how you
smell, will also depend on how you greet people in certain cultures, as many
women in certain cultures wear strong perfume to announce their arrival. Some
women will first apply a woody strong base fragrance and then apply a layer of
flowery fragrance on top. For many centuries, women in India use perfumes that
have base notes of patchouli and sandalwood for beautifying and religious
purposes which are mixed with floral sensual notes such as rose or jasmine.
Perfume
and fragrance makers still enshroud their recipes in mystery, as selling
perfume is like selling a dream, not matter if the fragrance is spicy, cool,
fresh or sensual. There are many players in the perfume industry although there
are three specific players when it comes to marketing celebrity fragrances.
First of all there is the celebrity whose name and image is attached to the
fragrance, of which they may have designed it, but are definitely involved in
promoting the fragrance.
Secondly fragrance companies are responsible
for creating and manufacturing the perfume and bringing it to the market, and
distributing it through the various retailers. The artist that creates the
fragrance is the perfumer, who in most instances works independently or work
for a company. Not only in Australia but worldwide, perfume and fragrances
change seasonally which makes this industry extremely competitive.
